Is the internet good in Bali?

Internet is the single most consequential utility for a Bali rental property, because the guests who fill your quiet months are the ones who cannot stay without it.

Why it matters more than owners think

Digital nomads and long-stay remote workers are what keep Canggu and Pererenan occupancy stable through February and March, which is where the annual number is decided.

That guest will not book a property with unreliable internet, and they check. Listings that state a speed get booked by them; listings that do not, do not.

For a villa in a nomad area, internet is not a utility. It is a feature you market.

The options

Fibre. Where it reaches, it is the answer — fast, reliable and inexpensive by international standards. Coverage is good across the developed south: Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Umalas, Sanur, Denpasar, and increasingly Pererenan and parts of the Bukit.

Availability is address-specific, not area-specific. A street with fibre may not have it on both sides, and a property three hundred metres from a connected one may need infrastructure that does not exist.

Where fibre does not reach, getting it to the property can be a significant one-off cost, and sometimes is simply not possible.

Mobile data. 4G coverage is broad and 5G is available in parts of the south. As a primary connection it is workable in some locations and unreliable in others, and it degrades when the local cell is busy — which in a tourist area is exactly when your guests are there.

Satellite. Low-earth-orbit services have changed what is possible in remote areas. Availability, regulatory status and pricing in Indonesia should be verified currently rather than assumed, but for genuinely remote parcels it has become a real option where nothing else exists.

What to check before buying

Availability at the exact address, confirmed with the provider, not the area.

The actual speed delivered, tested, not the advertised package.

Whether there is a backup option, because a single connection with no alternative is a single point of failure.

What the previous owner or manager used and what the guest complaints were.

If you are buying in an emerging corridor — Seseh, Kedungu, the interior Bukit, the highlands — treat this as a serious diligence item rather than an assumption. It affects what your property can charge and who will book it.

Setting it up properly

Get the fastest available package, because the marginal cost is small and the marginal benefit for a rental property is large.

Use proper networking. A single provider-supplied router in a villa with thick walls, several buildings and an outdoor area will not cover it. Mesh access points across the property cost little and eliminate the most common complaint, which is not "the internet is slow" but "it does not work by the pool".

Provide a wired option in at least one room. Remote workers on video calls value it.

Put the actual speed in the listing. "Fast WiFi" means nothing. A number means something, and the guests who care will filter for it.

Have a backup. A mobile data router as a fallback costs little and saves a bad review when the fibre goes down, which it does.

Reliability

Outages happen. Heavy rain, infrastructure work and provider issues all cause them, and the wet season is worse.

For a property marketing itself to remote workers, a redundant connection is not excessive. It is the difference between a minor inconvenience and a guest who could not work and says so publicly.

The wider point

If your property is in an area without a nomad market — the east, the north, the islands, the highlands — internet matters less commercially, because that guest is not booking there anyway.

If it is in Canggu, Pererenan, Umalas or Ubud, internet quality is directly connected to your low season occupancy, which is directly connected to your annual return.
