What does it actually cost to live in Bali?

What drives the number, what people underestimate, and why the figures you see online are usually somebody else's life.

Every answer you find online is somebody describing their own life and calling it a benchmark. A single person in a Canggu guesthouse and a family of four in Umalas are not living in the same country, financially.

So rather than one number, here is what actually moves it.

The four things that decide your cost

Where you live. Canggu and Seminyak carry a premium that has nothing to do with quality. The same house in Sanur or Ubud costs meaningfully less. Moving twenty minutes changes your rent more than any other decision you will make.

How you rent. Yearly contracts, paid up front, are dramatically cheaper than monthly. That upfront lump is the single biggest gap between the budget people plan and the one they live.

Whether you have children. International school fees are the largest line item in any family budget here, by a wide margin. [YOUR FIGURE]

How much you live like a tourist. Beach clubs, daily cafés and imported food will double a budget quietly. Locals-market cooking and warungs will halve it.

What people underestimate

What it does not include

Buying property gives you no right to live here. Residence is a separate system with its own cost. The self-funded route is a deposit of around USD 130,000 held in an Indonesian bank, and there are several other routes depending on what you will actually do here.

Cross 183 days in a year and you become an Indonesian tax resident, whatever your visa says.

The honest summary

Bali is cheaper than Australia, Europe or Singapore for the same standard of living. It is not cheap in the way it was ten years ago, and Canggu in particular has priced itself close to a mid-sized Western city for anything foreigner-facing.

Come for a long stay, including a rainy season, and track what you actually spend. That number is worth more than any article.
