How long does it take to get from Bali airport?
Google says 40 minutes to Canggu. In practice it is 60 to 90 in the afternoon. Here are the real numbers to the places people actually stay.
Distances in Bali are short and journey times are not. The island has one functional motorway, the toll road across the bay to Nusa Dua, and everything else is a single-carriageway road shared by trucks, scooters, ceremonies and dogs.
Real times from the airport
Times below assume a car, and give the normal range rather than the best case. Add 30 minutes to anything in the 4pm to 8pm window, and to anything on a Friday or Sunday.

Why Canggu is the worst of them
Canggu is 18 kilometres from the airport and can take an hour and a half. The reason is that the route funnels through Kerobokan and Umalas on roads built for a village, and Canggu's own internal roads — Batu Bolong, Pantai Berawa, the shortcut everyone uses — are single lane with parked cars on both sides.
If you are landing in the afternoon and staying in Canggu, budget 90 minutes and be pleasantly surprised.
The airport toll road
The Bali Mandara toll road crosses the bay from Benoa to Nusa Dua and is the one road where traffic moves. It makes Nusa Dua and Benoa quicker to reach than Seminyak, which is geographically closer. Scooters have their own dedicated lane on it.
What actually causes the delays
- Ceremonies. Processions close roads with no notice and no diversion. You wait. It is not negotiable and it is not a problem to be annoyed about.
- School runs at about 7am and 1pm.
- Rain, which floods specific junctions and halves everyone's speed.
- Single-lane bottlenecks at Canggu's Batu Bolong junction, Kerobokan's main road, and the Ubud approach through Mas and Peliatan.
- Sunset traffic toward Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and Canggu from about 4.30pm.
How to plan around it
Pick one base per three or four nights. The most common first-trip mistake is booking four areas in seven nights and spending the trip in a car.
Cluster by region. South (Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu) is one trip. Centre (Ubud, Sidemen, the highlands) is another. East and north are a third.
Fly into Bali, out of Lombok if you are doing both. Or take the fast boat one way and fly the other.
Do the long drives early. Leaving Ubud for the airport at 5am is a 75-minute drive. Leaving at 4pm is a two-hour gamble.
For anything over an hour, hire a driver for the day rather than a one-way transfer. The rate is often similar and you keep the car.

No train. There is a limited public bus network, Trans Metro Dewata, which is cheap and slow and not practical with luggage. Cars are how everyone moves here.
Is the toll road worth it from the airport?
It is the only road on the island where traffic reliably flows, and it is the reason Nusa Dua is quicker to reach than Seminyak.
Should I book an airport transfer in advance in Bali?
For late arrivals, families and anything beyond the south, yes. For a daytime arrival to Kuta or Seminyak, the official taxi counter or a ride app is fine.
