Can you use Grab and Gojek in Bali?

Grab and Gojek are the two super-apps of Southeast Asia, and in Bali they do cars, motorbike taxis, food delivery, parcels and groceries. For a visitor they are the cheapest and least stressful way to make short journeys, with one local complication nobody warns you about.

What they do

Car. A standard private car with a fixed price shown before you book, typically far below what a street taxi will quote.

Motorbike taxi. A rider arrives with a spare helmet and takes you pillion. Cheap, fast in traffic, and genuinely the quickest way across Canggu at 6pm. Not for luggage, and not if you would rather not ride.

Food delivery. GrabFood and GoFood cover almost every restaurant in the south, which is worth remembering the first time it rains for three hours.

Getting set up

Both apps need a phone number to register, and Indonesian numbers work best. An eSIM or local SIM avoids the verification loop foreign numbers sometimes hit.

Pay by app wallet where you can. Topping up GoPay or the Grab wallet at a convenience store takes two minutes and removes the change problem. Cash works too.

The part nobody tells you

In parts of Bali, local transport cooperatives have long-standing arrangements that restrict app drivers from picking up in their territory. You will see signs to this effect near some beaches, markets and villages, most commonly around parts of Ubud, Uluwatu and some beach car parks, and in a few residential areas.

In practice this means:

• Your driver may message asking you to walk to a main road or a specific corner.
• Some drivers will decline the job once they see the pickup pin.
• Drop-offs are usually less of a problem than pickups.

This is not a scam and it is not aimed at you. It is a dispute about local livelihoods that has been running since the apps arrived. Walk the two minutes, or use a local driver in those spots — often for a price that is fair anyway.

When the app is the wrong tool

• From the airport, where pickup is from a designated zone and the walk with luggage is real.
• For a full day of sightseeing. Six separate app rides cost more than a driver for the day and leave you standing in the sun between them.
• In the far north or east, where driver density is thin and you may wait a long time or find nothing.
• In heavy rain, when cars vanish and surge pricing appears.

Fares, roughly

Short hops within Canggu or Seminyak run 15,000 to 35,000 rupiah by bike and 30,000 to 70,000 by car. Seminyak to Canggu by car is usually under 100,000. Canggu to Ubud is a different category of journey and the app price will be well over 300,000, which is when a driver for the day starts making sense.

Safety and sense

Check the plate and the driver's name before you get in, which the app shows. Wear the helmet you are handed. Share your trip if you are alone at night. Rate honestly, because the drivers live on those ratings.

Food delivery, which is the underrated half

GrabFood and GoFood cover almost every restaurant in the southern strip, including many warungs that have no other online presence. Delivery charges are small, the tracking works, and in a villa a long way from anywhere it turns a 40-minute round trip into 20 minutes of waiting by the pool.

Two details that help. Set your delivery pin carefully, because villa entrances in Canggu and Pererenan are down lanes that maps render badly, and add a note with a landmark. And order earlier than you think in rain, when every driver in the area is already busy.

Sending things across the island

Both apps also move parcels. If you leave a jacket in a restaurant in Seminyak and you are in Ubud, a bike courier will collect it and deliver it for the price of a coffee. Residents use this constantly and visitors almost never think of it.
