When is Bali busiest?

Bali's crowd calendar has two layers: the international one, driven by northern and Australian holidays, and the domestic one, driven by Indonesian religious and school holidays. They peak at different times, and both matter.

The international peaks

July and August. European summer and Australian school holidays overlap. This is the busiest period of the year: villa rates at their highest, Canggu's traffic at its worst, restaurants requiring bookings, and the famous sights queued from mid-morning.

Mid-December to the first week of January. The most expensive fortnight of the year, and wet. Minimum stays of five to seven nights are common in villas, at double the usual rate.

Easter and the surrounding fortnight, a smaller spike.

The domestic peaks

Idul Fitri, at the end of Ramadan, and the week or so around it. This is the largest annual human movement in the world, and while most of it is within Java, Bali fills with domestic visitors. Flights and ferries are full and prices rise. The date moves about 11 days earlier each year.

Chinese New Year, which brings a significant wave of regional visitors for about a week.

Indonesian school holidays, typically around late June to mid-July and late December, which overlap with the international peaks and compound them.

Long weekends created by national holidays, when Java empties toward Bali.

The quiet periods

February. The quietest month of the year, and the wettest. Discounts of 30 to 50 per cent on the same villas that are impossible in August.

Late January and early March. Similar.

Late April to mid-June. The genuine sweet spot: dry weather, moderate prices, manageable crowds.

September to mid-October. Dry, clear, quiet once the first fortnight of September passes.

Late November to mid-December, before the Christmas wave.

What the crowds actually change

Traffic, most of all. Canggu in August takes twice as long to cross as Canggu in February.

Villa prices, by a factor of two between February and August for the same property.

Restaurant availability. The good places in Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud need booking in peak.

The sights. Tegalalang, Tirta Empul, Lempuyang and Tanah Lot are queued from mid-morning in peak and empty at 7am in any season.

Boats. Fast boats to the Nusas and Gilis sell out in July and August, and the morning departures go first.

The dates that override everything

Nyepi, usually in March, when the island and its airport shut completely for 24 hours. Plan deliberately around it. See Nyepi.

Galungan and Kuningan, every 210 days, when many businesses close for a day or two and families travel to their home villages, which fills the roads.

How to avoid the crowds in any season

• Start at 7am. This single habit removes most of it.
• Stay outside the strip. Pererenan, Sanur, Amed, Sidemen, Munduk are quiet in August.
• Go east and north. The crowd is concentrated in a strip about 20 kilometres long.
• Eat early or late, not at 8pm.
• Book the first boat of the day, which is also the calmest.

A month-by-month crowd summary

January. Quiet, wet, cheap after the first week.

February. The quietest month, the wettest, the cheapest.

March. Quiet, drying, with Nyepi closing the island for a day.

April. Building, dry, good value.

May. Busier, excellent weather, still below peak prices.

June. Busy from mid-month, the best all-round conditions.

July. Peak. Full, expensive, hot and dry.

August. The busiest of all, with strong winds and heavy traffic.

September. Quiet from mid-month, dry, one of the best choices.

October. Quiet, warm, humid at the end.

November. Quiet, rain arriving, good value.

December. Quiet to the 18th, then the most expensive fortnight of the year.

Booking behaviour by season

In peak, book accommodation months ahead, reserve restaurants, buy boat tickets in advance and expect minimum-stay rules over Christmas. In February and March you can book a villa the same week and negotiate a weekly rate.
