What can you do in Bali in 5 days?
One base, not three. Five days is enough for one region properly, and the mistake everyone makes is trying to see the whole island.
Five days in Bali means four usable days after arrival and departure. The island's driving times mean one base, or at most two, and a plan built around mornings.
The rule
Do not move more than once. Every change of base costs half a day. Two hours packing, two hours driving, an hour checking in. That is a quarter of your trip.
Option A: the south, one base
Best for first-timers who want beach, food and a taste of culture.
Day 1. Land, transfer, swim, sunset at the beach, early dinner. Do not plan anything else.
Day 2. Morning surf lesson or beach. Afternoon massage. Sunset at a beach club. Dinner in Seminyak.
Day 3. Full day with a driver: leave at 7am for Ubud. Tegalalang early, Tirta Empul, lunch in Ubud, monkey forest, back by 6pm.
Day 4. Uluwatu day: Melasti or Padang Padang in the morning, lunch on the cliff, Uluwatu temple and kecak at sunset, seafood at Jimbaran.
Day 5. Morning swim, late checkout, airport.
Option B: split south and Ubud
Best if culture matters more than the beach.
Nights 1 to 2: Ubud. Campuhan ridge at sunrise, Tegalalang early, a cooking class, Tirta Empul, the monkey forest.
Nights 3 to 5: Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu. Beach, surf, sunset, and one day on the Bukit.
One move, on the morning of day three, done by 11am.
Option C: south and Nusa Lembongan
Best if you want clear water.
Nights 1 to 2: Sanur. Beach path, calm swimming, a day trip to Ubud.
Nights 3 to 5: Nusa Lembongan, a 30-minute boat from Sanur. Snorkelling with mantas, the mangroves, Dream Beach, Devil's Tear, and the bridge across to Ceningan.
What not to attempt in five days
- Amed, Lovina or the far north. Three to four hours each way.
- The Gili Islands. The crossing alone eats two days.
- Three bases. You will remember the car.
- Mount Batur plus a full day after it. The 2am start costs you the following afternoon.
- Nusa Penida from Canggu as a day trip, unless you are willing to leave at 6am.
The daily shape that works
Out early. Temples, terraces, waterfalls and beaches are all better before 9am, and the traffic is a third of what it becomes.
Middle of the day at the pool. It is 32 degrees and humid.
Late afternoon out again, for sunset.
Dinner early, because Bali eats early and kitchens close.
Budget for five days
Excluding flights, per person, sharing a room:
- Backpacker: 200 to 300 USD.
- Comfortable: 500 to 800.
- Villa and drivers: 1,200 and up.
Add the tourist levy on arrival and airport transfers both ways.
What to book before you arrive
Accommodation and the airport transfer. Everything else can wait. In July, August and around Christmas, book the accommodation months ahead; in February you can arrive and choose.
A driver for your one long day, through your hotel or a recommendation, a day or two in advance.
The kecak at Uluwatu in high season, which sells out.
Nothing else. Surf lessons, spas, cooking classes and boats can all be arranged the day before, usually more cheaply and always more flexibly than through an online platform.
If your five days are in wet season
Flip the shape: outdoor things in the morning, indoors in the afternoon, and stay in the south where it rains less than in Ubud or the highlands. Keep the long day trip flexible so you can move it to the clearest morning. See visiting in rainy season.
The version for a second visit
If you have done the south before, spend the five days in one place you have not been: Amed for diving, Sidemen for terraces, Munduk for waterfalls, or Nusa Lembongan for water. One base, no day trips, and an entirely different trip from the first one.

It is enough for one region done well. It is not enough to see the island, and trying is the most common way people waste the trip.

Yes, as a long day trip from Sanur. From Canggu it means a 6am start and a late return.

Yes, if you treat it as one region rather than an island tour. Five days in the south with one day inland is a good holiday.
