What is Uluwatu like to visit?

The Bukit is the limestone peninsula hanging off the southern end of Bali. It is geologically different from the rest of the island: dry, elevated, with white cliffs dropping into turquoise water, and almost no rivers, which is why water supply is a chronic local issue.

What it is actually like

Spread out. There is no centre and no walkable strip. Uluwatu, Pecatu, Bingin, Padang Padang, Balangan, Ungasan, Melasti and Nyang Nyang are separate clusters connected by roads across scrubland, each with its own cliff, its own staircase and its own set of warungs and villas.

The views are the best in Bali by a distance. Everything else is a trade-off against that.

The beaches

Padang Padang. Small, beautiful, reached through a gap in the rock. Famous and crowded.

Bingin. A cliff staircase down to a narrow beach with warungs built into the rock, and a heavy reef wave in front. One of the most atmospheric places on the island.

Balangan. Longer, easier access, a good beach for a day with lunch in a warung.

Dreamland and Melasti. White sand and turquoise water, and Melasti has road access rather than stairs, which makes it the practical choice for families.

Nyang Nyang. A long steep descent and an enormous empty beach. Worth it once.

Green Bowl, Suluban, Thomas Beach. All beautiful, all involve stairs.

Note that in 2025 several long-standing clifftop businesses at Bingin were demolished in an enforcement action over building on state land and setbacks. The beach is unchanged. The built environment above it is in flux.

Surfing

The Bukit holds the most famous waves in Indonesia: Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin, Dreamland, Balangan, Green Bowl. They break over shallow coral reef, they are crowded, and they are not places to learn.

Dry season, April to October, is the season. Experienced surfers plan entire trips around it. Beginners should learn at Kuta or Canggu and come here to watch.

Uluwatu Temple and the kecak

Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on a cliff 70 metres above the sea and is one of the six key temples of Bali. Go for sunset, wear a sarong, and hold onto your sunglasses because the monkeys are professionals.

The kecak fire dance is performed in the clifftop amphitheatre at sunset. It is touristic and genuinely good: a hundred men chanting, a Ramayana story, and the sun going down behind it. Buy tickets early in high season.

Eating and evenings

Clifftop bars with sunset views, a strong warung layer, and an increasingly serious restaurant scene in Pecatu and Ungasan. Single Fin at Suluban is the institution, busiest on Sunday evenings.

Nightlife is limited and spread out. This is not the place for a night out without a driver.

Getting around

A scooter is close to essential, and the distances mean you will ride a lot. Grab and Gojek work but are patchy in the more remote corners, and some car parks restrict app pickups.

The airport is 45 to 75 minutes. Canggu is 90 minutes. Seminyak is an hour. Uluwatu is not a base from which you casually pop to anywhere else.

The constraints worth knowing

Water. The Bukit has no rivers and depends on deep wells and trucked water. Shortages happen, particularly in dry season, and some villas run out.

Stairs. Most beaches require a long steep descent and a harder climb back.

Distance. Everything is 15 to 30 minutes from everything else by scooter.

Sunset traffic. The road to Uluwatu temple at 5pm in high season is a queue.
