Where should you actually live in Bali?

People research where to buy and assume the same answer applies to where to live. It usually does not. The best rental areas are frequently the worst places to actually be.

Canggu and Berawa

The most foreigners, the most cafés, the easiest social life if you are arriving alone. Also the worst traffic on the island and getting worse.

Good for: first year, under 35, building a network fast.

Bad for: anyone who values quiet, or drives daily.

Pererenan and Cemagi

What Canggu was five years ago. Still walkable to beach, meaningfully calmer, and the food scene has followed.

Good for: couples, second-year expats who left Canggu.

Bad for: anyone who wants everything within five minutes.

Uluwatu and the Bukit

Spread out, dramatic, surf-driven. You need a car or you will feel stuck. The community is smaller and tighter.

Good for: surfers, people who want space.

Bad for: families needing schools, anyone without transport.

Sanur

Calmer water, older demographic, families. Denpasar's amenities and hospitals are close. Genuinely underrated for daily life and the permits move faster here if you build.

Good for: families, retirees, anyone tired of the west coast.

Bad for: nightlife, and anyone who wants a scene.

Ubud

Inland, greener, cooler, wellness-oriented. A completely different rhythm and a completely different crowd.

Good for: creatives, longer-stay residents, people escaping the coast.

Bad for: beach access, and anyone who finds the wellness scene tiring.

The practical filters most people forget

Schools. If you have children, school location decides everything else. Pick the school, then live near it.

Hospital distance. Serious care is in Denpasar. Being ninety minutes away matters more at 3am than it does when you are choosing.

Traffic at the hour you actually travel. Visit at 8am and 6pm, not at midday.

Rainy season. See the road you would use every day in February before deciding.

The advice I give most often

Rent for a year before you buy anything. People are certain about their area for about six months, and then most of them move.
