How do you extend a visa on arrival?

The visa on arrival gives you thirty days and one extension of thirty more. The extension is where most Bali overstay fines originate, and almost all of it is avoidable.

What you get

Thirty days from and including the day you arrive, extendable once for a further thirty. Sixty days total, then you leave.

There is no second extension. If you want longer than sixty days, you need a different permit, arranged before you arrive.

How to extend

The application is made inside Indonesia, before the first thirty days expire.

Depending on current procedure it can be done through the immigration system online, or at an immigration office, and it may require attendance for biometrics and photographs. Procedures have changed repeatedly in recent years, so verify the current process rather than relying on what someone did last year.

It is granted, not automatic. Lodging the application is not the same as holding the extension.

The timing rule that matters

Apply as soon as the window opens, not when the deadline approaches.

Processing takes days. Immigration offices have queues, appointment availability varies, and public holidays interrupt everything. An application lodged on day twenty-eight leaves no margin for a document that needs correcting or an appointment that is not available until day thirty-two.

The people who end up paying overstay fines are almost never people who ignored the date. They are people who left it until the date was close.

Using an agent

Very common, generally fine, and the source of a specific recurring failure.

If you use one, get the actual filing reference and the receipt, not a reassurance that it is handled. Agents who took payment and did not lodge are a known pattern in Bali, and the exposure falls entirely on you — immigration does not care who you paid.

Check the status yourself where the system allows it.

Count your days correctly

The thirty days includes your arrival day. People count from the following day and lose one, which is the single most common cause of a one or two day overstay.

Check the actual stamp in your passport or the e-VOA record rather than your memory of what you bought. If the stamp says something different from what you expected, the stamp is what counts.

After sixty days

Leave, or hold a different permit.

The pattern of leaving for a few days and returning on a fresh visa on arrival is possible and it attracts attention when repeated. Immigration officers can and do decline entry to people who appear to be living in Indonesia on consecutive tourist visas, and a refusal at the border is a considerably worse outcome than an extension declined at an office.

What the extension does not change

The extension gives you more days. It does not give you more permissions.

A visa on arrival, extended or not, permits tourism, visiting, meetings, negotiations and site visits. It does not permit work — including running your own villa operation, managing staff, handling bookings or dealing with suppliers. Extending the stay does not change what you may do during it.

If you have already overstayed

Go to the airport or immigration and pay. For a short overstay that is the whole process: a fixed daily fine per person, paid before you can leave.

Do not attempt to leave without addressing it. You will be stopped, and concealment turns a fine into something worse.
