Which KITAS do you need for Bali?
KITAS is not one thing. There are several, they permit different activities, and choosing by duration rather than activity is how people get deported.
KITAS — *Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas* — is a limited stay permit. It is not a single product. It is a category containing several permits that authorise different activities, and the one you hold determines what you may lawfully do.
The mistake that costs people most is choosing by duration and price rather than by activity.
The main types
Work KITAS. Sponsored by an Indonesian company, tied to an approved position under an RPTKA foreign worker plan. This is the only route that authorises employment in Indonesia. It ends when the employment ends.
Investor KITAS (E28A). For shareholders in an Indonesian company meeting an investment threshold. It grants residency on the basis of the investment. It is not a general work permit — the scope of what it permits is narrower than many holders assume, and confirming current scope matters.
Family / dependant KITAS. For the spouse and children of a KITAS or KITAP holder. It permits residence, not work.
Spouse KITAS. For a foreigner married to an Indonesian citizen, sponsored by the spouse. It permits residence and leads toward KITAP over time. It does not by itself grant the right to work.
Retirement KITAS. For applicants above a minimum age meeting income and accommodation requirements. Residence, no work.
Remote worker KITAS (E33G). For people employed by a company outside Indonesia, earning income from outside Indonesia, working remotely. It does not permit working for Indonesian clients or companies.
Student KITAS. Sponsored by an educational institution.
Second Home visa and the Golden Visa routes sit alongside these, generally for longer periods and based on funds, investment or qualifications rather than employment.
Choosing by activity, not duration
The question is never "which one is longest and cheapest". It is what will you actually be doing?
Employed by an Indonesian company, including your own: work KITAS, with RPTKA.
Shareholder, not working operationally: investor KITAS, with the scope confirmed.
Working remotely for a foreign employer: E33G.
Married to an Indonesian: spouse KITAS.
Retired, above the age threshold: retirement KITAS.
Living here without working, with funds: Second Home or Golden Visa routes.
Holding a permit that does not cover what you are doing is the exposure. It is not discovered by an inspector at your door; it surfaces at renewal, at a sponsor change, at a dispute, or at a complaint.
What they all involve
A sponsor, whether a company, a spouse or an institution. The sponsor carries obligations and the permit is tied to them.
An application made from outside Indonesia in many cases, though the e-visa system has changed the practice considerably. Verify current procedure rather than relying on what someone did two years ago.
Post-arrival reporting, including registration and often an SKTT domicile certificate.
Renewal, on a cycle depending on type. Missing it does not produce a reminder, it produces an overstay.
An exit permit (EPO) when you leave permanently, closing the permit properly. Leaving without it causes problems on your next application.
The route to KITAP
KITAP — *Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap* — is the permanent stay permit. It is generally reached after holding a KITAS continuously for a qualifying period, with the period varying by category.
Spouse and investor routes are the most common paths. KITAP brings longer validity, simpler renewals and a more stable position, and it is worth planning toward rather than arriving at by accident.
Why the right KITAS matters for property
Hak Pakai requires a KITAS or KITAP. It is the strongest ownership position available to a foreign individual, and without residency it is not available at all. That alone is a reason to sort residency before a significant purchase rather than after.
A stay permit also makes opening an Indonesian bank account, obtaining an NPWP as a resident taxpayer and dealing with utilities and suppliers substantially easier.
And being here long enough to hold a KITAS generally means you are in tax residency territory, which is a separate question with consequences in your home country. Work it out deliberately.
Common questions
What is a KITAS in Indonesia?
A limited stay permit. It is a category rather than a single permit, covering work, investor, family, spouse, retirement, remote worker and student types, each authorising different activities.
Which KITAS do I need to work in Bali?
A work KITAS sponsored by an Indonesian company and tied to a position approved under an RPTKA foreign worker plan. No other type authorises employment in Indonesia.
Does an investor KITAS let me work?
It grants residency on the basis of an investment, and its scope is narrower than many holders assume. Confirm the current position rather than treating it as a general work permit.
Do I need a KITAS to buy property in Bali?
Not for a leasehold, which you can sign on a tourist visa. You do need a KITAS or KITAP for Hak Pakai, the strongest position available to a foreign individual.
What is the difference between KITAS and KITAP?
KITAS is a limited stay permit renewed periodically. KITAP is the permanent stay permit, generally reached after holding a KITAS continuously for a qualifying period.
