How do you extend a KITAS?
Extensions are not automatic and the deadlines are unforgiving. The bigger risk is that a lapse resets your path to permanent stay.
A KITAS is a limited stay permit, which means it ends. Extending it is a routine process that goes wrong for predictable reasons.
The basic mechanics
Extension is applied for before the current permit expires, through the sponsor that holds it — the employer, the spouse, the institution or the company.
It is granted, not automatic. An application lodged is not a permit extended, and the gap between those two things is where people end up in overstay.
Processing takes time, and the amount varies by permit type, by the completeness of the application and by the immigration office handling it. Lodging on the last available day is not applying in time.
Start early
The practical rule: begin the process a month to six weeks before expiry, not a week.
That allows for a document that needs correcting, a sponsor who is slow to sign, a biometric appointment that is not available immediately, and the ordinary friction of a system that does not send reminders.
Diarise the expiry date at booking, and diarise a start date a month earlier.
What the application generally involves
The sponsor's documents and a letter supporting the extension. Your passport, with sufficient remaining validity. The current permit. Evidence that the basis for the permit still holds — continued employment, continued marriage, continued study, continued investment.
Biometrics and an office attendance, depending on the permit type and the current procedure.
Then the extension is endorsed and, for some types, the associated reporting is updated.
The reporting that goes with it
A KITAS carries post-arrival and ongoing reporting obligations, including registration and an SKTT domicile certificate in many cases.
If you have moved address since the permit was issued and not updated the record, that inconsistency frequently surfaces at extension. Keep the address record current rather than discovering it at renewal.
Where extensions fail
The sponsor relationship changed. A work KITAS is tied to the employment. If you left the job, changed role materially or the company's position changed, the extension is not a formality and may not be available at all. The permit needs to change with the circumstances, not after them.
The company's compliance is not current. A sponsoring PT PMA with missed LKPM filings, outstanding tax returns or an inactive NIB has a standing problem, and that problem attaches to the permits it sponsors. This catches people whose own paperwork is perfect.
Document mismatches. A name spelled differently between the passport and an earlier record, an address that does not match, a passport renewed since issue leaving two records that do not reconcile. Systems match strictly and reject rather than query.
An agent who did not file. Recurring and infuriating. You paid, they did not lodge, and the exposure is yours. Get the actual filing reference and receipt, not a message saying it is in hand.
Leaving the country mid-process without the correct re-entry position, which can invalidate the application.
If the extension will not be granted
Address it before expiry, not after. Options depend on circumstances and may include changing to a different permit type with a different sponsor, or leaving and re-entering on a new permit.
What does not work is waiting to see. Once the permit expires you are in overstay, with a daily fine from day one and an escalation to detention and a re-entry ban past a threshold measured in weeks.
Toward KITAP
Continuous KITAS holding for a qualifying period is generally what leads to KITAP, the permanent stay permit, with longer validity and simpler renewals.
"Continuous" is doing real work in that sentence. A gap caused by a late extension can reset the clock, which is a further reason to treat renewal dates seriously if permanent residence is the objective.
Common questions
When should I apply to extend a KITAS?
A month to six weeks before expiry. It is granted rather than automatic, processing takes time, and an application lodged is not a permit extended.
What happens if my KITAS expires while extending?
You are in overstay from the day after expiry, with a daily fine and escalation to detention and a re-entry ban past a threshold measured in weeks.
Why do KITAS extensions get refused?
Most often because the sponsor relationship changed, the sponsoring company's filings are not current, or documents do not match across records.
Can I change sponsor when extending a KITAS?
A permit is tied to its sponsor, so a change of employer or circumstances generally means a new permit rather than an extension. Sort it before the current one expires.
Does a gap between permits affect KITAP eligibility?
It can. KITAP generally requires continuous KITAS holding for a qualifying period, and a gap caused by a late extension can reset that clock.
