Can you study in Indonesia on a student visa?
Sponsored by the institution, not by you, and it does not permit work. The language-school route is the one foreigners in Bali actually use.
The student route is a legitimate residency path that is less used by foreigners in Bali than it could be, partly because people do not realise what qualifies.
What it is
A stay permit sponsored by an accredited Indonesian educational institution for the duration of a course of study.
It covers formal education — universities, schools, and accredited language and vocational programmes — and depends entirely on the institution being recognised and willing to sponsor.
Who actually uses it
Degree students at Indonesian universities, including at Udayana in Bali.
Language students on serious Bahasa Indonesia programmes at accredited institutions. This is the route most relevant to adults who want to be here legitimately while learning the language.
Research students and those on exchange arrangements.
Vocational and arts students — traditional music, dance, crafts — at recognised institutions, which is a genuine and underused category in Bali specifically.
Children of foreign residents attending Indonesian schools, although dependants of a KITAS holder are usually covered through a family permit instead.
What it requires
An accredited sponsoring institution willing to act. This is the first and hardest step, and not every institution advertising courses to foreigners is in a position to sponsor a permit.
Acceptance onto a course, with documentation.
Ministry approval through the education pathway in addition to the immigration process.
Financial evidence and accommodation documentation.
Post-arrival reporting, including registration and an SKTT.
The process is slower than most permit routes because it runs through two ministries rather than one. Allow considerably more time than you expect.
What it does not permit
Work. A student permit authorises study. Employment, freelancing for Indonesian clients, or running a business operationally all require separate authorisation.
This catches people who assume a student permit is a general residency licence. It is not, and the enforcement position on working without authorisation has tightened.
Why it is worth knowing about
For someone who wants to spend a year or more in Indonesia legitimately, without an employer sponsor, without a spouse, without the capital for an investor route, and without wanting to run on consecutive tourist visas — a serious language course at an accredited institution is a real option.
You get lawful residency, you learn the language, and for anyone who intends to buy property here, being able to read the room in Indonesian is worth considerably more than the course costs. The documents that govern your purchase are in Bahasa Indonesia, and the notary conversation goes differently when you understand it.
It also builds documented residential history, which matters if a longer-term position is the objective.
What it does not do for property
A student permit is a KITAS, and Hak Pakai requires a KITAS or KITAP, so in principle residency opens that route. In practice, whether a student permit supports a Hak Pakai application is a question to put to a notary before relying on it, since the permit is tied to a temporary purpose.
For a leasehold, it makes no difference. Any foreigner on any visa can sign a lease.
Practical points
Verify the institution's accreditation and sponsorship track record before paying course fees. Ask how many foreign student permits they have sponsored and speak to someone who went through it.
Allow months, not weeks. Two ministries, two processes.
Understand the renewal position if the course runs longer than the initial permit.
Do not treat it as a workaround. A permit obtained for study and used to live here while working is exposure, and it is the kind of thing that surfaces at extension.
Common questions
Can foreigners study in Indonesia on a student visa?
Yes, with a stay permit sponsored by an accredited educational institution, covering universities, schools and accredited language and vocational programmes.
Can I work on an Indonesian student visa?
No. It authorises study only. Employment, freelancing for Indonesian clients or running a business requires separate authorisation.
Can I get residency through a language course in Indonesia?
Through an accredited institution willing to sponsor a permit, yes. It is a legitimate and underused route for someone without an employer, spouse or investor basis.
How long does a student permit take?
Longer than most permits, because it runs through both the education and immigration processes. Allow months rather than weeks.
Does a student KITAS let me buy property?
Any foreigner can sign a leasehold on any visa. Whether a student permit supports a Hak Pakai application is a question for a notary before relying on it.
