What visit visa types exist for Indonesia?

Short courses, work trials, conferences and exhibitions each have a visit visa category. The line between attending and working is what matters.

Indonesia has more visit visa categories than most people realise, aimed at specific short-term purposes. They matter because the alternative — using a tourist visa for something it does not cover — is the exposure.

The categories

Short course or training. Attending a course, a training programme or a certification, at a recognised provider. Common in Bali for yoga teacher training, diving certification, language study and professional courses.

Work trial or probation. Where a company is assessing a foreign candidate before committing to an employment arrangement, within defined limits.

Event participation. Conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, seminars — attending, exhibiting or speaking.

Business visit. Meetings, negotiations, site visits and due diligence.

Sports and competition. Participating in events.

Filming and journalism, which have their own requirements and are more tightly controlled than people assume.

Index codes and requirements change, so verify the current category and its conditions rather than following an older list.

The line that decides everything

Attending, learning, observing, discussing and assessing are visit activities.

Producing, delivering, teaching, performing and directing are work.

Payment is not the test. Indonesian immigration practice treats productive activity as work regardless of whether you receive anything.

So: attending a yoga teacher training is a visit activity. Teaching on one is work. Attending a conference is a visit activity. Speaking at it commercially, running a workshop, or exhibiting and selling is closer to work and may need different authorisation.

The distinction sounds fine and it is the one that gets enforced.

Short courses specifically

Bali's course economy is large — yoga, diving, surfing, language, wellness, culinary.

Attending a course at a recognised provider is straightforward and there is a category for it where a stay exceeds what a visa on arrival allows.

The provider's status matters. An accredited institution can sponsor properly. A loosely organised operation may not be in a position to, and "a tourist visa is fine" tells you about the operation rather than about the rules.

For longer study, a student permit sponsored by an accredited institution is the route, and it can provide lawful residency while you study — an underused option for someone without an employer, spouse or investor basis.

Work trials

Where a company wants to assess a candidate before committing to an RPTKA application and a work KITAS.

It is limited, in duration and scope, and it is not a route to working indefinitely while nobody decides.

If the role becomes real, the employer needs to obtain RPTKA approval and a work permit. A trial that quietly becomes employment is employment without authorisation.

Events

Attending a conference or exhibition is covered by a business visit.

Exhibiting, which involves setting up, staffing a stand and selling, sits closer to work. Established organisers handle the permit position for exhibitors routinely — ask them what they are arranging.

Speaking, particularly for a fee, is worth clarifying.

What every one of them requires

A defined purpose, documented.

Frequently a sponsor or inviting party in Indonesia — the provider, the employer, the organiser — that is registered and in a position to sponsor.

Personal documents, financial evidence and, for some categories, a police clearance.

A defined duration, with extension within limits for some categories.

Where people go wrong

Using a visa on arrival for everything, because it is easy. It covers tourism, visiting, meetings and conferences — not courses beyond its duration, not trials, not delivering at events.

Assuming the organiser has handled it. Ask specifically what they are sponsoring and under what index, and get the answer in writing before booking flights.

A trial that becomes a job. The most common drift, and the exposure sits with you as well as the employer.

Repeated consecutive entries. Someone attending courses back to back on successive tourist visas attracts the same scrutiny as anyone else living here on them, and immigration can decline entry.

For a property owner

The same principle that runs through all of this: your permit has to match what you actually do.

Owning a villa and receiving rental income is not work. Operating it — bookings, staff, contractors, suppliers — is, regardless of ownership and regardless of payment.

If you are here for a course, be here for a course. If you are running a business, get a permit that covers it.

Common questions

What visa do I need for a course in Indonesia?

A short course or training visit visa where the stay exceeds what a visa on arrival allows, or a student permit sponsored by an accredited institution for longer study.

Can I do a work trial in Indonesia?

There is a category for it, limited in duration and scope. If the role becomes real, the employer must obtain RPTKA approval and a work permit.

Do I need a visa to attend a conference in Bali?

Attending is covered by a business visit visa. Exhibiting, staffing a stand or speaking commercially sits closer to work and should be clarified with the organiser.

Is attending a yoga teacher training considered work?

Attending is a visit activity. Teaching on one is work, regardless of payment, and requires a permit that covers it.

What happens if I use a tourist visa for a course or trial?

It covers tourism, visiting, meetings and conferences only. Anything productive is work in immigration terms, with exposure ranging from fines to deportation and a re-entry ban.
