What permit do family members need in Indonesia?

A spouse and children of a permit holder get residence through the sponsor, not work rights, and the permit ends when the sponsor's does.

When one person in a family obtains a work, investor or retirement permit, the rest of the family is covered through a dependant arrangement rather than through permits of their own.

What it covers

A spouse and children of a KITAS or KITAP holder, sponsored by that person rather than by an employer or an institution.

It permits residence. It does not permit work, and it does not create an independent position.

The dependency, which is the defining feature

The permit is derived. If the principal's permit ends — employment finishes, a company closes, a renewal is missed, a sponsor withdraws — the dependants' permits end with it.

That has two practical consequences.

Plan changes together. A principal changing employer needs a new permit, and so does everyone attached to them. Arrange both before the old employment ends, not after.

A gap affects everyone. A late extension by the principal puts the whole family into overstay simultaneously, with a daily fine accruing per person, including children.

What the application involves

The principal's permit and sponsor documents.

Proof of relationship — a marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificates for children. Foreign documents need legalisation by apostille, since Indonesia is a party to the Hague Convention, and sworn translation.

Address documentation, and post-arrival reporting including an SKTT for each family member.

Personal documents for each dependant.

Allow time. Legalising and translating foreign civil documents is slower than people expect and it is the step that delays most family applications.

Work and study

A dependant spouse cannot work on the dependant permit. Employment requires the employer to obtain RPTKA approval and a work permit in the spouse's own name — which is a separate application and not automatic.

This catches couples where one partner has a job offer and the other assumes they can pick something up. Plan for it: either the second partner obtains their own permit on its own basis, or accepts that they will not be working in Indonesia.

Children can attend school. International and local schools enrol children on dependant permits routinely.

Children who are Indonesian citizens

If one parent is an Indonesian citizen, the children's position is different and considerably better.

Under the 2006 citizenship law a child of a mixed marriage may hold limited dual citizenship until eighteen, plus a declaration period afterwards in which they must choose one nationality.

An Indonesian citizen child can hold Hak Milik, freehold land. No foreigner can, ever. So that declaration at eighteen is an asset-holding and inheritance decision as much as an identity one.

Register the child's status properly, and record the deadline somewhere that survives house moves.

Ageing out

A dependant permit for a child is available while they are a child. There is an age at which it ceases to apply, and at that point the young person needs their own basis — study, employment, or leaving.

That is not a surprise if you plan for it and it is a genuine problem if you do not. It arrives at the same time as university decisions, which is a busy moment to discover an immigration deadline.

Toward KITAP

Dependants of a KITAP holder may in time have their own route to permanent status. Requirements differ by category and have changed, so verify the current position for the specific circumstances.

Continuity matters here as everywhere — a gap caused by a late renewal can reset a qualifying clock for the whole family.

Practical advice

One calendar for the whole family. Every permit's expiry, diarised a month ahead.

Update addresses for everyone when you move, or the mismatch surfaces at renewal for each person individually.

Legalise and translate civil documents early, and keep the legalised originals somewhere reachable from another country.

Understand the principal's position, because everyone's depends on it.

Common questions

What is a dependant KITAS in Indonesia?

A residence permit for the spouse and children of a KITAS or KITAP holder, sponsored by that person, permitting residence but not work.

Can a dependant spouse work in Indonesia?

No. Employment requires the employer to obtain RPTKA approval and a work permit in the spouse's own name, which is a separate application and not automatic.

What happens to family permits if the main permit ends?

They end with it. A change of employer, a missed renewal or a sponsor withdrawal affects the whole family simultaneously, so changes have to be planned together.

Can children on a dependant permit go to school in Indonesia?

Yes. International and local schools enrol children on dependant permits routinely.

What documents prove a family relationship for a dependant permit?

Marriage and birth certificates, legalised by apostille since Indonesia is a party to the Hague Convention, and translated by a sworn translator.
