What happens if your visa expires while applying for another?
Switching categories leaves a window where one permit has ended and the next has not arrived. That gap is the risk.
People arrive from Australia or the UK assuming Indonesia has something equivalent to a bridging visa. It broadly does not, and understanding that early prevents an expensive mistake.
The expectation
In Australia, a bridging visa keeps you lawfully in the country while a substantive application is decided. Your existing visa expires, the bridging visa takes effect, and you remain lawful.
The UK has a comparable concept through the continuation of leave while an in-time application is pending.
That mechanism creates a habit: apply before expiry and you are covered while it processes.
The Indonesian position
There is no general equivalent. Lodging an extension or a new permit application does not, by itself, create a lawful status that survives the expiry of your current permit.
Some categories carry specific arrangements while a change or extension is processed, and practice varies by permit type and by office. What does not exist is a blanket rule that an application in progress protects you.
The practical consequence: if your permit expires while an application is pending and no specific arrangement covers you, you are in overstay. A daily fine accrues from day one, per person, and past a threshold measured in weeks it escalates to detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.
Immigration does not treat "I had applied" as an answer.
What to do instead
Apply early, not on time. A month to six weeks before expiry for a KITAS extension, and as soon as the window opens for a visa on arrival extension. Build in margin for a document that needs correcting and an appointment that is not available immediately.
Confirm what covers you during processing. Ask explicitly, for your specific permit type, what your status is while the application is pending and get the answer from immigration or a consultant rather than an agent's reassurance.
Keep an exit option. If a renewal is uncertain, holding a flight out before expiry removes the worst outcome. Leaving and re-entering on a new permit is almost always better than overstaying.
Confirm the filing. Get the reference and the receipt. Agents who took payment and did not lodge are a recurring cause of overstay in Bali, and the exposure falls entirely on you.
Where this bites hardest
Changing permit type. Moving from a tourist visa to a KITAS, or from one KITAS category to another, frequently requires leaving Indonesia and applying from outside. Assuming you can switch in-country and waiting for it to process is how people end up unlawful.
Changing sponsor. A permit is tied to its sponsor and is not transferable. Leaving a job means a new permit, not an extension, and there is no bridging period while you arrange it. Sort the new permit before the old employment ends.
A sponsor withdrawing. If an employer or spouse sponsor withdraws, the basis for the permit ends and there are rules about the period in which you must regularise or leave.
If you are already out of time
Address it immediately. The fine increases daily and the threshold where it changes character is fixed.
For a short overstay, pay at the airport or at immigration. For a longer one, take advice before presenting yourself, because the process differs and the handling affects the outcome.
Do not attempt to leave without addressing it. You will be stopped, and concealment converts a fine into something considerably worse.
Why it matters more if you own property
A re-entry ban separates you from an asset you cannot manage remotely and cannot easily sell from abroad. For a villa owner, an overstay is disproportionately expensive relative to the fine itself.
That is the real argument for treating immigration dates with more care than they usually get.
Common questions
Does Indonesia have a bridging visa?
There is no general equivalent to Australia's bridging visa. Lodging an application does not by itself create lawful status past the expiry of your current permit.
What happens if my Indonesian visa expires while I am applying for another?
Unless a specific arrangement covers your permit type, you are in overstay, with a daily fine from day one and escalation to detention and a re-entry ban past a threshold measured in weeks.
Can I change visa type inside Indonesia?
Frequently not. Moving from a tourist visa to a KITAS, or between KITAS categories, often requires leaving and applying from outside.
What should I do if my sponsor withdraws?
Regularise before the permit lapses. There is no bridging period, and a gap is both an overstay and a reset of any KITAP qualifying clock.
How early should I apply to extend an Indonesian permit?
A month to six weeks before expiry for a KITAS, and as soon as the window opens for a visa on arrival extension.
