What is Pererenan like to visit?

Pererenan sits immediately west of Canggu across the Perancak river, and it has spent the last few years becoming what Canggu was five years ago: the same cafes and surf, with space.

What it is like

A main road running from the rice fields down to the beach, with cafes, restaurants, small hotels and villa lanes either side. Wider and calmer than Canggu, with rice fields still visible between the buildings, and a beach with a good river-mouth break and far fewer people.

Development is rapid. What is quiet now will not be in three years, which is the same sentence that was written about Canggu and about Berawa before that.

The beach

Pererenan Beach is dark sand with a surf break that works well at mid tide, warungs behind it, and sunsets without the density of Batu Bolong. The current is strong and there are no reliable patrols.

Seseh and Cemagi, ten minutes further west, are quieter again: long empty dark-sand beaches, a clifftop temple at Gede Luhur, and almost nothing built.

Nyanyi and Kedungu, twenty minutes on, empty enough that you may have the beach.

Eating and drinking

Pererenan now has a serious cluster of restaurants and cafes, several of them among the better places on the island, plus the warungs that were always there. It is genuinely walkable along the main road, which Canggu is not.

Evenings are quieter. The beach clubs and late venues are back in Canggu and Berawa, ten minutes away.

Who it suits

Yes: people who want Canggu's food and surf with less traffic, remote workers, families who want space, anyone on a second trip who remembers Canggu being calmer.

No: anyone who wants a nightlife scene on the doorstep, or who wants to walk to a beach club.

Practicalities

Getting there: 22 kilometres from the airport, 60 to 100 minutes depending on traffic. Ten minutes to Canggu, 90 to Ubud, 90 to Uluwatu.

Getting around: a scooter, realistically. The main road is walkable; everything else is not.

Construction. There is a lot of it. Check recent reviews and satellite imagery before booking a villa, because the quiet lane in the photographs may now be a site.

Traffic. Better than Canggu, and the junction where Pererenan meets the Canggu shortcut is a bottleneck at sunset.

Around the area

Tanah Lot is 20 minutes west, and going at sunrise or mid-morning avoids the sunset crush.

Pura Gede Luhur Batungaus, on the cliff at Cemagi, dramatic and almost empty.

The rice fields inland at Munggu and Tumbak Bayuh, which are what the area was entirely a decade ago and are excellent for an early walk or ride.

Where to stay

Along the main Pererenan road for walkability to the cafes and a five-minute ride to the beach.

The rice-field lanes inland at Munggu and Tumbak Bayuh, where villas are larger and cheaper and you will ride everywhere.

Seseh and Cemagi for something genuinely quiet with almost nothing around it, and a 15-minute ride to the nearest cluster of restaurants.

Nyanyi and Kedungu, 20 minutes further, where a handful of larger properties sit on an almost empty coast.

A day here

Surf or walk on the beach at first light, breakfast on the main road, the rice-field lanes inland by scooter before it gets hot, an afternoon at the pool, and sunset either at the beach warungs or at Tanah Lot 20 minutes west. Dinner is either walkable or ten minutes back into Canggu.

That is the argument for the area in one paragraph: everything Canggu offers is within ten minutes, and you do not have to live in it.
