Where do you do yoga and wellness in Bali?

Drop-in classes for a few dollars, teacher trainings, silent retreats and spa treatments at a fraction of home prices. Plus what to look for before paying for a week-long retreat.

Bali is one of the world's largest wellness destinations, and the quality runs from world-class to exploitative, often on the same street.

Where it happens

Ubud is the centre. Several large studios run classes from dawn until evening, with drop-ins typically 130,000 to 200,000 rupiah and class passes much cheaper per session. The range covers vinyasa, hatha, yin, ashtanga, kundalini, sound healing, breathwork and everything adjacent.

Canggu and Pererenan are the other hub, with a slightly more fitness-oriented crowd: yoga alongside pilates, mobility, cold plunges and gyms.

Uluwatu has a growing scene attached to the surf community.

Sidemen, Amed and the highlands have small retreat properties for people who want the quiet version.

Drop-in classes

You do not need to book a retreat. Walk into any of the big studios, pay for a class, borrow a mat. This is the cheapest way to sample teachers, and the standard of teaching in Ubud in particular is genuinely high because the competition is fierce.

Retreats, and how to judge one

A week-long retreat runs from roughly 700 USD at the simple end to 4,000 and up at the luxury end. What you are paying for varies enormously.

Before booking, check:

  • Who is teaching, by name, and what their background is. "Our team of teachers" is not an answer.
  • Group size. Twenty people is a workshop; six is a retreat.
  • What is actually included. Meals, transfers, treatments, excursions, or none of them.
  • Where it is. A retreat 40 minutes from Ubud means a scooter ride every time you want a coffee.
  • The schedule. Some are gentle, some are genuinely demanding.
  • Recent independent reviews, not the testimonials on the website.

Teacher training

Bali is one of the largest markets in the world for 200-hour yoga teacher trainings, at prices well below Europe and North America. Quality varies wildly. Check the school's registration with a recognised body, the lead trainers' hours, the cohort size and the daily schedule. A course with 40 students and two teachers is a lecture.

Spa treatments

This is where Bali is unambiguously good value. An hour of Balinese massage at a good local spa is 100,000 to 250,000 rupiah. The same treatment in a resort is three to five times that, in a nicer room.

Traditional treatments worth trying: Balinese massage, firm with long strokes; boreh, a warming spice body wrap; lulur, a turmeric and rice scrub used traditionally before weddings; and kerokan, coin scraping, which is not relaxing and is very much a local remedy.

The less regulated end

Bali also hosts plant medicine ceremonies, unlicensed "healers", fasting and detox programmes, and various treatments with no clinical basis, some of which are actively risky. Indonesian law on controlled substances is severe, and the marketing around some of these events does not mention that.

Treat medical claims with the scepticism you would apply at home, check what a "practitioner" is actually qualified in, and be aware that a serious adverse reaction in a rice field an hour from a hospital is a different situation from one at home.

Traditional Balinese healing

Balian, traditional healers, are a genuine part of Balinese culture, consulted by locals for physical and spiritual complaints. Visiting one as a tourist attraction, which a well-known book made popular, is viewed with mixed feelings locally. If you go, go through a respectful local introduction, bring an offering, and understand that you are entering somebody's religious practice rather than buying an experience.
