How much is electricity in Bali?

Air conditioning and the pool pump are the bill. A three-bedroom villa running hard costs far more than owners budget from a residential baseline.

Electricity is the largest utility cost in a Bali villa and the one most likely to be undersized when you buy.

How PLN works

PLN is the state electricity company, and supply comes at a contracted capacity measured in VA (volt-amperes). Your connection has a rating — 2,200 VA, 3,500 VA, 5,500 VA, 7,700 VA, 11,000 VA and upward — and drawing more than it trips the supply.

Tariffs are tiered by connection class. Higher capacity connections sit on different tariff bands, so the cost per unit is not uniform across all properties.

Most homes are on prepaid metering, topped up by token, or postpaid with monthly billing.

What a villa actually needs

This is where properties are commonly undersized.

Aircon is the dominant load. A three-bedroom villa with aircon in every room, a pool pump, a water pump, a water heater, a fridge, a washing machine and lighting draws considerably more than a local household, and all of it runs simultaneously when the villa is full.

As a working guide: a two-bedroom villa with a pool needs a meaningfully higher connection than a family home, a three or four bedroom needs more again, and a five-bedroom with service needs a substantial commercial-scale connection.

An undersized connection trips under load, which happens precisely when the villa is full, in peak season, with paying guests in it. That produces reviews.

Upgrading capacity

It is possible and it takes time and money.

There is an application, a fee scaled to the capacity increase, and depending on the area, infrastructure work. In some locations — the interior Bukit, remote parcels, emerging corridors — the local network may not support a large connection without upgrade work that costs real money.

Check the existing connection capacity before you buy, not after. It is a number on the meter and on the bill, and it is one of the cheapest checks available.

If you are building, specify the capacity at design stage and confirm the local network supports it, because retrofitting is considerably more expensive than getting it right initially.

What it costs to run

Electricity in Indonesia is not especially cheap by regional standards, and a villa with heavy aircon use produces bills that surprise owners modelling from a residential assumption.

A busy three or four bedroom villa with aircon running across occupied rooms, a pool pump on a daily cycle and water heating will produce a meaningful monthly bill in peak season, and a much smaller one in a quiet month.

Two points that follow.

Electricity scales with occupancy, so it belongs in your variable cost assumptions rather than as a fixed monthly figure.

Ask for twelve months of actual bills when buying, not an estimate. They tell you both the real cost and whether the connection has been running near its limit.

Reducing it

Inverter aircon units, which use substantially less than older fixed-speed units. On a villa with five or six units this is the single largest saving available and it pays back quickly.

Pool pump timing. Running filtration on a shorter, well-scheduled daily cycle rather than continuously saves a great deal. It also aligns with solar generation if you have it.

Solar, where the daytime load justifies it. A villa's aircon, pool pump and water pump all run during daylight, which is the best possible match for solar. Payback of five to eight years is realistic on a well-sized grid-connected system — with the caveat that export arrangements have been constrained, so size to your daytime load rather than to your roof.

Water heating, where solar or heat pump options replace electric elements.

Guest behaviour, which you cannot control. Guests leave aircon running in empty rooms with doors open. Key-card systems help; asking politely does not.

Reliability

Outages happen, more frequently in some areas than others and more often in the wet season.

For a villa taking paying guests, a generator or battery backup for essentials — lights, fridge, internet, and ideally one aircon unit — is worth considering. A four-hour outage with guests in residence is a manageable inconvenience with backup and a review without it.

Common questions

How much does electricity cost for a Bali villa?

It scales with occupancy and aircon use, and a busy three or four bedroom villa produces meaningful bills in peak season. Ask for twelve months of actual bills rather than an estimate.

What is VA in Indonesian electricity?

The contracted supply capacity in volt-amperes. Your connection has a rating and drawing more than it trips the supply, which is why villas are commonly undersized.

How do I know if a villa's power supply is big enough?

Check the connection capacity on the meter and the bill before buying, and compare it against the aircon units, pool pump, water pump and heating the property actually runs.

Can I upgrade a PLN connection?

Yes, with an application and a fee scaled to the increase, though in some areas the local network needs upgrade work that costs real money and takes time.

What is the best way to cut electricity costs in a Bali villa?

Inverter aircon units, which is the single largest saving on a villa with several units, followed by sensible pool pump scheduling and solar where daytime load justifies it.
