Is Yogyakarta worth visiting from Bali?

Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java: a sultanate city with its own kraton, a batik and silver tradition, a serious food culture, and two of the great monuments of Southeast Asia within an hour.

Borobudur

The largest Buddhist monument in the world, built in the ninth century, a stepped pyramid of nine platforms carrying more than 500 Buddha statues and two thousand relief panels.

Access has changed. Visitor numbers to the upper terraces are now limited and require a separate timed ticket with a guide and provided sandals, as part of conservation measures. The lower levels and grounds are accessible on a standard ticket.

Sunrise. The classic sunrise viewing is run through specific arrangements, and there is also the option of watching the sun come up over the monument from Punthuk Setumbu hill nearby, which is cheaper and gives you the silhouette.

Book ahead, particularly for upper-terrace access in peak periods, and check current rules before you travel: they have changed several times.

Prambanan

A ninth-century Hindu complex 17 kilometres from the city, with towering candi dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Thinner and sharper than Borobudur, and at sunset with the light on the stone it is the more beautiful of the two.

The Ramayana ballet is performed in an open-air theatre with the temples behind it during the dry season, and is genuinely worth the evening.

The city itself

The Kraton, the sultan's palace, still a working court.

Taman Sari, the water castle, with its bathing pools and underground mosque.

Malioboro, the main street, for street food, batik and crowds.

Kotagede, the old silver quarter.

The food. Gudeg, jackfruit stewed for hours in palm sugar and coconut, is the city's dish. Yogyakarta is one of the best eating cities in Indonesia and almost nobody visits for that.

Getting there

Fly from Bali to Yogyakarta International Airport, about 90 minutes, several daily. Note the airport is at Kulon Progo, over an hour from the city, connected by train and bus.

Train from Jakarta or Surabaya, comfortable, scenic and cheap, and the best way to travel in Java if you have the time.

Combining it

Yogyakarta pairs naturally with Mount Bromo and Ijen in east Java, making a week-long Java loop that ends with the ferry or a short flight back to Bali. See the Java overland route.

Practical notes

It is hotter and more humid than Bali and much busier.

Dress more conservatively than in Bali; Java is predominantly Muslim and Yogyakarta is a traditional city.

Traffic is heavy and becak and Grab are how you move.

Volcano. Mount Merapi, active and closely monitored, sits north of the city. Jeep tours run on the lower slopes.

How long: three nights covers the city, both temple complexes and a volcano tour without rushing.

A three-day plan

Day one. Arrive, kraton and Taman Sari in the morning, Kotagede silver workshops in the afternoon, Malioboro street food in the evening.

Day two. Borobudur early, either for sunrise from Punthuk Setumbu or on the first tickets of the day, back to the city for lunch, then Prambanan at late afternoon light and the Ramayana ballet if it is running.

Day three. Merapi jeep tour at dawn on the volcano's lower slopes, or a batik workshop, then a train to Bromo or a flight home.

Getting between the sites

Borobudur is about 90 minutes northwest of the city, Prambanan 30 minutes east, and the airport over an hour southwest. A driver for the day costs roughly 600,000 to 900,000 rupiah, which is the standard way to do both temples.

Trains and the airport rail link work well, and Grab and Gojek operate throughout the city. Becak, the cycle rickshaws, are for short hops and photographs rather than transport.

What it costs

Foreign-visitor tickets at Borobudur and Prambanan are substantially higher than domestic ones, and the upper-terrace access at Borobudur is a separate, limited ticket. A combined Borobudur and Prambanan ticket is usually available and saves a little.

Accommodation runs from 15 USD guesthouses to serious heritage hotels at 150 and up. Food is very cheap and very good.
