How do you get to Nusa Penida from Bali?

Every trip to the Nusa Islands starts with a boat across the Badung Strait, which is a current-heavy stretch of water between two land masses. That is why the diving is good and why the crossing can be lively.

The ports

Sanur is the main departure point and the most convenient: frequent fast boats all day to both Penida and Lembongan, a proper harbour, and 30 to 50 minutes from the airport.

Padang Bai, on the east coast, serves Penida and Lembongan and is also the port for the Gilis and Lombok.

Serangan, near Sanur, used by some operators.

Kusamba, used by local boats, mostly for cargo and residents.

On Penida the arrival points are Toya Pakeh and Banjar Nyuh in the northwest, and the smaller Sampalan. On Lembongan it is Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay, where boats often beach directly onto the sand.

Times and costs

• Sanur to Nusa Penida: 30 to 45 minutes, roughly 150,000 to 400,000 rupiah each way depending on operator.
• Sanur to Nusa Lembongan: 30 to 40 minutes, similar price.
• Penida to Lembongan: 15 to 25 minutes on a shuttle boat.
• Padang Bai to Penida: 45 minutes to an hour.

Foreign-visitor pricing is common and normal. Tickets are sold by operator counters, online, through hotels and by agents, and hotel bookings usually include the transfer to the port.

What the crossing is like

Fast boats are open or semi-open speedboats carrying 30 to 60 people, and they move. In calm morning conditions the crossing is smooth. By the afternoon, and in wet season, it can be genuinely bumpy: spray, slamming, and passengers being sick.

If you are prone to seasickness, take the earliest boat of the day, sit at the back on the centreline, take something before boarding, and keep your eyes on the horizon.

Luggage is stacked at the front or on the roof and gets wet. Use a dry bag for anything that matters.

Safety, honestly

Standards vary between operators. There have been incidents on this and similar routes in Indonesia, including overloading and mechanical failure.

Practical rules: use an established operator with its own boats rather than the cheapest agent ticket, look for life jackets on board and wear one if conditions look rough, avoid boats that are visibly overloaded, and do not travel in bad weather because you have a flight to catch. Insurance policies vary on what they cover for local boat transport.

Cancellations and the flight problem

Crossings are cancelled in bad weather, usually at short notice, and in wet season it happens several times a month. Harbours also close for local ceremonies, including the Nyepi Segara silent days observed on the islands.

Never plan to cross back on the day of an international flight. Return to Bali the day before. This is the single most common way a Nusa trip goes wrong.

Bringing a scooter or a car

You cannot take a hire scooter from Bali on a fast boat. Rent on the island instead. Cars cross on the slow car ferries from Kusamba and Padang Bai, which take a couple of hours and are for residents and freight rather than visitors.
