How much does a swimming pool cost in Bali?

Almost every villa here has a pool, because almost every guest expects one. It is also one of the largest single line items in a build and one of the most persistent running costs afterwards.

Build cost

Premium here means glass edges, water features, elaborate tiling, integrated spa or complex geometry. An infinity edge over a valley costs considerably more than the same volume of water in a flat garden, because the engineering behind it is different.

What drives the price

Structure. Reinforced concrete shell, and on sloping or unstable ground the engineering for it.

Finish. Plain plaster is cheapest. Ceramic tile, glass mosaic and natural stone climb steeply, and glass mosaic on a curved surface is the most labour-intensive of all.

Edge detail. A standard coping is simple. An infinity edge needs a balance tank, a second pump and precise levels.

Systems. Filtration, pumps, heating if you want it, salt chlorination, lighting, automatic dosing.

Site. Access for excavation, spoil removal, and whether the ground needs retaining.

The running cost people forget

A pool is not a one-off purchase. Monthly, in USD:

That is roughly USD 100 to 200 a month before anything breaks. Pumps have a finite life in this climate, salt systems corrode, and heaters fail. Budget a replacement cycle rather than treating each failure as a surprise.

Resurfacing is the big one. Depending on finish and water chemistry, expect to resurface somewhere between year five and year ten, and expect it to cost several thousand dollars.

Salt versus chlorine

Salt systems are pleasanter to swim in and reduce chemical handling, but the cell is a consumable and salt is corrosive to nearby metalwork and stone. Chlorine is cheaper to install and more demanding to manage.

Most villas here run salt for guest comfort. Just budget for cell replacement and specify fittings that tolerate it.

Does a pool pay for itself?

In the nightly rental market, a private pool is close to mandatory rather than a differentiator. A three-bedroom villa without one competes badly regardless of how good the rest of it is.

So the question is not whether the pool adds revenue, it is whether the property is viable without it. Usually it is not, which makes the pool a cost of entry rather than an upgrade.

• Get the pool quoted separately and in writing, not folded into a per-square-metre building rate
• Confirm what the quote includes: excavation, spoil removal, filtration, lighting, coping, decking
• Ask about the balance tank if the design has an infinity edge
• Check the pool fits inside your KDB coverage limit and the setbacks on the plot
• Ask what the contractor's warranty covers and for how long
