What is it like having a baby in Bali?

Good private maternity care exists in the south. The paperwork after the birth is where foreign parents get caught.

Plenty of foreign couples have children in Bali and the medical side is generally straightforward. The administrative side afterwards is where people find themselves in an unexpected situation.

The medical picture

Private hospitals in the south — Denpasar, Kuta, Nusa Dua — provide competent maternity care with English-speaking staff and international-standard facilities. BIMC and Siloam are the names most foreign residents use.

Midwife and birth centre options exist, including in Ubud, with a more natural birth approach, and some foreign parents choose them.

The ceiling applies here as elsewhere. A complicated delivery, a premature baby needing advanced neonatal intensive care, or a serious maternal complication may require transfer. Establish in advance where you would go and confirm your insurance covers evacuation with a realistic limit.

Maternity insurance almost universally carries a waiting period — frequently ten to twelve months from policy start. If you are planning a family, arrange cover well before conceiving, because a policy taken out after a pregnancy begins will not cover it.

The paperwork, which is the real subject

A birth in Indonesia generates Indonesian documentation, and a foreign child needs to be registered with their own country as well. Both have deadlines.

The hospital birth notification, issued at delivery.

Indonesian birth certificate, registered with the local civil registry (Dukcapil). There is a time limit for registration and late registration is considerably more difficult, so do not let this drift in the first sleep-deprived weeks.

Your embassy or consulate. Registering the birth with your own country, and applying for the child's passport. Requirements and timelines vary by nationality and this is the step people underestimate.

The child's immigration status. A foreign child born in Indonesia needs a permit like any other foreign national. Typically a dependant permit attached to a parent's KITAS. Establish this before the birth rather than after, because a baby without a valid permit is accruing an immigration problem.

Citizenship, which is the consequential part

If both parents are foreign, the child is generally a foreign national. Indonesia does not grant citizenship by birth on its territory to children of foreign parents.

If one parent is an Indonesian citizen, this is where it matters enormously.

Under the 2006 citizenship law, a child of a mixed marriage may hold limited dual citizenship until age eighteen, plus a declaration period afterwards — commonly described as up to three years — within which they must choose one nationality.

Miss that deadline and the Indonesian citizenship is generally lost.

That is a decision with permanent consequences, because an Indonesian citizen can hold Hak Milik, freehold land. No foreigner can, ever.

For a family with property here, the declaration at eighteen is an inheritance and asset-holding decision as much as an identity one. Register the child's dual status properly at birth, and put the eighteenth birthday and the declaration deadline somewhere that survives house moves and changes of email address.

The prenuptial agreement sits underneath it

If one parent is Indonesian and one is foreign, the marital property agreement determines whether the Indonesian parent can hold freehold cleanly at all.

Without one, Indonesian joint marital property rules give the foreign spouse an interest in assets acquired during the marriage, and because a foreigner cannot hold Hak Milik, that interest compromises the Indonesian spouse's position.

Since the Constitutional Court decision in 2015, it can be made after the wedding as well as before. Couples frequently sort the children's paperwork and leave this, which is the wrong order — it determines whether there is property to pass on.

Practical advice

Arrange insurance early, before conceiving, because of the waiting period.

Choose the hospital and meet the doctor well in advance.

Know the evacuation plan and confirm the cover limit.

Start the paperwork immediately after the birth. Indonesian registration has a deadline, embassy registration takes time, and the immigration permit needs to exist.

Get the citizenship position right if one parent is Indonesian, and record the deadline.

Sort the marital property agreement, if applicable, separately and properly.

Common questions

Is it safe to have a baby in Bali?

Private hospitals in the south provide competent maternity care with international-standard facilities. Complicated deliveries or advanced neonatal care may require transfer, so confirm evacuation cover.

Does a baby born in Bali get Indonesian citizenship?

Not if both parents are foreign. Where one parent is an Indonesian citizen, the child may hold limited dual citizenship until eighteen plus a declaration period.

What paperwork follows a birth in Indonesia?

The hospital notification, Indonesian birth registration with Dukcapil within a time limit, registration with your own embassy and a passport application, and an immigration permit for the child.

Does maternity insurance cover you in Bali?

Policies almost universally carry a waiting period of ten to twelve months, so cover must be arranged well before conceiving rather than after a pregnancy begins.

Why does my child's citizenship matter for property?

An Indonesian citizen can hold Hak Milik freehold and no foreigner can, so the declaration at eighteen decides whether that person can ever own land in Indonesia.
