Do you need to speak Indonesian in Bali?
You can live here on English alone. You will pay more, understand less, and stay outside most of what is actually happening.
Learning Bahasa Indonesia is the highest-return thing a foreign property owner in Bali can do that has nothing to do with property.
It is an unusually learnable language
No verb conjugation. The verb does not change for person or tense. *Saya makan* is I eat, I ate and I will eat, with time supplied by a separate word.
No grammatical gender. No masculine or feminine nouns.
No plurals in the usual sense. Repetition or a quantity word does the work.
No tones, unlike Thai, Vietnamese or Mandarin.
Latin script, and the spelling is genuinely phonetic. What you read is what you say.
It is consistently ranked among the more approachable languages for English speakers, and a few months of real effort produces functional conversation in a way that is simply not true of the alternatives in the region.
Bahasa Indonesia and Balinese
Bahasa Indonesia is the national language, spoken everywhere, used in all official documents, law and business. This is the one to learn.
Basa Bali is the Balinese language, spoken at home and in ceremony, with speech levels that vary according to the relationship between speakers. Complex, and not necessary.
Learning a few Balinese greetings is appreciated. Learning Bahasa Indonesia is useful.
Why it matters commercially
Every document that governs your property is in Bahasa Indonesia, and the Indonesian version is the one that binds regardless of any English translation.
You will still get a sworn translation — that is non-negotiable — but the conversation with your notary goes entirely differently when you can follow the Indonesian text rather than relying on someone's summary of it. Being able to read the numbers, the dates and the key terms yourself changes your position.
Staff management. A villa manager, housekeeper, gardener and security team who can be spoken to directly rather than through an intermediary is a better-run property. Instructions land, problems surface earlier, and the relationship is different.
The banjar. The customary village organisation is the first forum for boundary, access and neighbour disputes, and it operates in Indonesian and Balinese. A foreigner who can participate is treated differently from one who cannot.
Contractors and trades. Specifications communicated directly are specifications followed.
Officials. Land office, immigration, tax. Being able to follow what is happening rather than being told afterwards is worth a great deal.
Price. The foreigner price and the local price exist, and language moves you between them. Not entirely, and noticeably.
How to learn it
A course at an accredited institution, which has a secondary benefit: it can support a student KITAS, giving you lawful residency while you study. For someone without an employer, spouse or investor basis who wants to be here legitimately, this is a genuinely underused route.
Private tutoring, which is inexpensive by Western standards and the fastest way to progress.
Apps and self-study for vocabulary and structure, which work well for a language this regular.
Using it daily, which is the actual variable. Bali's problem for learners is that English is widely spoken in the tourist areas, so it is entirely possible to live here for years without learning anything. That requires a deliberate decision to use Indonesian even when English would be easier.
What to learn first
Numbers, which you will use constantly and which unlock prices, dates and quantities.
Greetings and politeness, which change how you are received immediately.
The property vocabulary that actually matters: sewa (lease), jual (sell), beli (buy), tanah (land), rumah (house), surat (document, letter), sertifikat (certificate), pajak (tax), izin (permit), perpanjangan (extension).
And the two words that decide a lease: jaminan (guaranteed) and prioritas (priority). You do not need to speak Indonesian to find those two words in a document and know which one you are holding, and knowing that is worth more than most of the rest of this page.
The honest return
Six months of genuine effort gets you conversational. That changes your daily life here, your relationships with staff and neighbours, and your position in every transaction you enter.
Against the cost of a language course, it is the best value available to a foreign owner in Bali.
