Should you stay on Gili Air or Gili Meno?
Air has the best balance of quiet and dinner options. Meno is nearly empty with turtles off the beach. Neither has traffic, nightlife or reliable ATMs.
If Gili Trawangan is the busy one, Air and Meno are the reasons people keep coming back to this group.
Gili Air
The closest of the three to Lombok, about 1.5 kilometres across, with a real village of a couple of thousand residents alongside the tourism.
What it is like. A cluster of beach bars, cafes and dive shops on the southeast, quiet beaches on the north and west, sandy lanes through coconut palms in the interior, and almost no noise after 11pm.
The water. Shallow, clear, and full of green turtles on the reef off the east and north coasts. You can snorkel straight off the beach and see them within minutes.
Eating. The best range of the three quiet options: warungs, beach cafes, a few genuinely good restaurants, and the night warungs by the harbour.
Who it suits. Almost everybody. Couples, families, divers, solo travellers, and anyone who found Trawangan too much and Meno too little.
Gili Meno
The smallest and quietest, between the other two, with a salt lake in the middle and a few hundred residents.
What it is like. Very little: a scatter of guesthouses and small resorts, a handful of restaurants, a turtle hatchery, and long empty white beaches.
The water. The best snorkelling of the three from the shore, with turtles on the east coast and the underwater sculpture installation — a ring of human figures on the seabed — a short swim or boat ride out, which is the single most photographed thing in the Gilis.
Eating. Limited. Hotel restaurants and a few small places. Fine for three nights, thin for a week.
Who it suits. Honeymooners, readers, snorkellers, and anyone actively trying to do nothing.
The caveat. Mosquitoes near the salt lake, limited food, and if the weather turns there is genuinely nothing to do.

Practical notes for both
No vehicles. Walk, cycle or take a horse cart.
Cash. Bring it. ATMs exist and fail.
Fresh water is scarce and showers can be brackish.
Medical facilities are minimal. Clinics only, with evacuation to Lombok or Bali for anything serious.
Power can be intermittent.
Mosquitoes carry dengue. Use repellent, particularly at dawn and dusk and near Meno's salt lake.
Getting between the islands
Public shuttle boats run a circuit between the three several times a day for a small fare, and private charters go on demand. Do not swim between islands: the channel currents are strong and this has killed people.
Getting there
Fast boats from Padang Bai on Bali, 1.5 to 2.5 hours, most of which stop at Trawangan and Air and some at Meno. From Bangsal on Lombok, local boats take 10 to 20 minutes.
Where to stay on each
Gili Air. The southeast corner has the concentration of bars and dive shops, and is the liveliest. The north and west coasts have quieter, better beaches, with a ten-minute walk into the busy side for dinner. The interior is cheaper and hotter.
Gili Meno. The east coast faces the sunrise and has the best snorkelling, the west coast has the sunsets over Bali. Both are quiet. Avoid the immediate area around the salt lake unless mosquitoes do not bother you.
A three-night plan
Day one: arrive, swim, walk the island, sunset on the west side. Day two: snorkel trip by boat around all three islands, including the statues off Meno, then dinner at the harbour. Day three: a dive, or a morning of nothing, then the sunrise walk on the east coast and a last swim.
Anything more structured than that is missing what these islands are for.
